Spirit Awareness

The ability to notice the presence of spirits; (noun)

Pronounciation: ˈspɪɹɪt əˈwɛə.nəs

Etymology:

Spirit awareness is a general term describing the ability to note the presence of spirits. This ability can manifest in various ways, from a sense that “something is there” to mediumship. It is best to view spirit awareness as a spectrum, however, for convenience, three levels, or terms, have been established: Sensatives, who can sense the presence of spirits in their vicinity; Visors, who can see spirits; and chanellers, who are able to communicate with spirits and take them in. Spirit awareness appears both in magions and humans.

The origin of spirit awareness in humans is not entirely clear, but it is know to be hereditary, and therefore humans who possess such abilities are considered magic-folk. Since there are magion species that have spirit awareness, it is generally thought that it reached humans by interrelations, albeit the lake of clear evidence.

It should be noted that while spirit awareness usually refers to spirits of the dead, that is not always the case. Some magions, particularly fae, are not quite corporal and cannot be perceived by most, but are noted by those with spirit awareness.
