For the last (!!) August Chills story I chose a short work by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, yep, you heard it right - Sherlock Holmes’ dad wrote ghost stories too! The story is told from the perspective of an unnamed man who recalls his last hours.
Listen to his story :
For the work I picked some elements from the story, like the clock, car and of course the text. But I also added a few details that weren’t mentioned, like the propeller and the gold-copper damask pattern. I wanted some additional out-of-story elements because of how he describes his memories, sometimes clear, sometimes vague, so it fit that some unrelated images flicker in. Plus, they added to the vintage feel, fitting with the period.
Update:
After finishing the video I wasn’t completely happy with the art I made and after some thinking, I realized it felt like a background waiting for a focal point, so I added one :)
I used an old photo, printed on collage paper so that the portrait will have a (fittingly) ghostly transparency. You can see a similar technique in The Dybbuk video, and the final result bellow.
As expected from Sir Conan Doyle, this story is an absolute gem, from the first line that sets the mood perfectly, to the thrilling descriptions of the car ride. The first line of the ghost’s tale “I can remember some things upon that evening most distinctly, and others are like some vague, broken dreams.” is one of my favorite points, it resonates perfectly with my image of ghosts, I do love a fragmented tale ;)
I used a variety of materials and techniques to create a fragmented vision: painting, stamping, foiling, and much gluing :) I love the texture the paint and foil create, and the shine reflected from the metals and synthetic mica I used for ‘broken glass’.
