In memory, vampire Spook
There was once a man, and then - there was a vampire. He was still a man, really, but… well, you get the point ;)
The idea of this project was to use the two sides of this coffin vignette to tell the story of a vampire. The back of the coffin shows the memorial of the man he was before he was turned, his photo set in decorated frame and candles lighted for him. The front of the vignette has two sections, the upper one shows a moonlit graveyard scene, and bellow is the vampire, silhouetted before his tomb, he is sending his loyal bats out into the night sky, who knows what plans he is scheming…
I listed the main materials I used bellow, but I thought I’d also go over some of the process.
I used a small vignette box for a base, that’s where the battery holder of the lights is hidden. I only used one string of tiny lights, because I wanted the lights to be dimmed for an eerie atmosphere.
The portrait in the back is printed on vellum, but I doubled it with another layer to dim the lights more. It doesn’t show so well in the photo, but the light is very soft. I attached the frame only in the corners, so the light sips through and lights the embossed background. I really love how it brings out the pattern.
For the drippy candles I followed the tutorials shared by Tami Bastiaans and Tim Holtz. When I saw those lighted candles I knew I had to add them here!
The tiny lights were threaded to the front, where the light up the gate/window (however you choose to see it) in the front and the full moon above the graveyard. I used another tip from the same Tim Holtz demo and used polyfill to diffuse the lights behind the arch, it works beautifully! The moon is lighted with a single light from the strand, so there wasn’t any need to diffuse it.
The lighting is a big part of this project, and those elements are best seen in the dark, but there are also a lot of details that are much more visible in the light. The graveyard scene has a lot of detailed textures, and so does the bat ledge and the edges of the vignette.
I think my favorite detail is the sleepy bat hiding in the upper corner of the arch scene. Clearly he thinks that whatever orders the vampire has can wait till after his nap.

Hope you enjoyed this little walk through, the list of main materials is bellow, if you have any questions or comments I’d love to hear!
